Maldives Reduces Night Duty Allowance for Health Sector Workers

Health ·
The Maldivian government has reduced the night duty allowance for health sector employees, including doctors, nurses, and lab technicians, sparking discontent among staff. According to reports, the allowance for night shifts from 12 am to 6 am has been cut from MVR 100 to MVR 60, as part of changes to the pay framework announced by the Finance Ministry in August 2026. The allowance for shifts from 6 am to 12 pm remains at MVR 40. The reduction was reflected in September salaries. Doctors expressed frustration, noting that the night shift is demanding and that staff shortages in some hospitals require them to work extra hours even on off days. They also highlighted that the overtime allowance budget has been cut, and promises to hire more doctors have not been fulfilled.
