Maldives Seafood Association Hails UK Tariff Cuts as Major Industry Breakthrough

Politics ·
The Maldives Seafood Processors and Exporters Association (MSPEA) has welcomed the United Kingdom's decision to remove tariffs on Maldivian tuna, describing the move as a significant leap forward for the nation's fishing industry. The association expressed gratitude to the UK government for including Maldivian tuna products in a new set of tariff elimination measures aimed at lowering import costs for consumers. According to the MSPEA, the UK's broader policy change is designed to support global supply chains and make imported goods more affordable for the general public. For the Maldives, the inclusion of tuna products within this framework represents a critical developmental milestone, potentially increasing the competitiveness of Maldivian exports in one of the world's most sophisticated markets. However, the association cautioned that the current tariff suspension is only a temporary measure, mandated for a period of two years. MSPEA urged the Maldivian government to pursue continuous negotiations to ensure this arrangement transitions into a permanent policy. The association emphasized that long-term stability is essential for local exporters to secure a predictable marketplace and foster sustainable growth within the fisheries sector. In its statement, the MSPEA credited the diplomatic efforts of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, as instrumental in securing this advantage. The association extended its appreciation to all stakeholders involved in strengthening international relations and enhancing the global standing of Maldivian producers. By removing these financial barriers, the Maldives stands to strengthen its trade ties with the UK, providing a strategic opening for local fisheries to expand their reach and increase the economic value of the country's most vital natural resource.
