Maldives Secures $200,000 Grant to Build Climate-Resilient Education System
Politics ·
The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) has approved a USD 200,000 grant to bolster the Maldives' efforts in strengthening climate resilience across its education sector. The funding aims to create a climate-adaptive system capable of withstanding and recovering from the increasing frequency of natural disasters and climate-related shocks.
According to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, the initiative will be implemented under the Climate Smart Education Systems (CSES) technical initiative. This strategic project is led by the Education Ministry in close collaboration with UNESCO and Save the Children Australia, with a scheduled completion date of May 2027.
The CSES programme is designed to tackle four critical areas of vulnerability. These include improving access to climate finance, integrating climate awareness into curriculum and teacher development, enhancing the physical resilience of school infrastructure, and refining data and planning systems to better predict and manage environmental risks.
This new funding builds upon the foundations laid by the Transforming Education (THAIBHA) programme, which is also supported by the GPE. By aligning these initiatives, the government aims to advance sector-wide education development and ensure that learning environments remain safe and operational despite the archipelago's high vulnerability to rising sea levels and extreme weather.
The move reflects a growing necessity for the Maldives to integrate environmental sustainability directly into its national infrastructure, ensuring that the next generation of students is both protected from and educated about the climate crisis.
