Maldives Secures Guaranteed Funding for Island-Wide Sports Facilities Drive

President Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled a comprehensive national sports development plan, backed by secured funding, to build international-standard athletic facilities across the Maldives. The initiative aims to address critical shortages, starting with a state-of-the-art indoor futsal complex in Hulhumalé. During the 'Espresso with Raees' youth consultative forum, President Muizzu shared architectural concepts for the multi-tiered Hulhumalé facility. 'The land has been secured for the futsal stadium in Hulhumalé,' he said. 'The ground level will feature a stadium capable of hosting international tournaments, while the upper two floors will house four additional training pitches.' The complex will include classrooms, locker rooms, a first-aid centre, and a cafeteria, creating a holistic sports hub for the capital region. Funding is ensured through a 'guaranteed financing system' designed to withstand global economic volatility. President Muizzu explained that this approach prevents delays despite cost-cutting measures, saying, 'The funding for all of these initiatives is secured through a guaranteed financing system.' The urgency stems from a deficit of indoor spaces, which currently forces the top-ranked South Asian Futsal champions to share the congested Rehendhi Turf. Beyond the flagship futsal complex, the government is advancing a skate arena at Usfasgandu, a bowling arena in Malé’s Industrial Village, and an e-gaming stadium at Sultan Park. Projects are also planned for twenty islands with populations exceeding 3,000 residents, expanding access nationwide. Construction is set to begin within months, with several projects, including the bowling arena and indoor netball complexes, in final planning stages. This island-wide drive seeks to elevate Maldivian athletics to international standards, foster youth engagement, and build healthier communities through enhanced recreational infrastructure.
