The Maldives has been crowned the Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination 2026 at the World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony. The prestigious event, held on September 27 at CROSSROADS Maldives, coincided with World Tourism Day and marked the return of the regional gala to the archipelago for the first time in a decade.
Beyond the top destination honor, the Maldives secured several key categories, including Leading Dive Destination, Leading Green Destination, and Leading Honeymoon Destination. The Visit Maldives Corporation was also recognized as the Indian Ocean’s Leading Tourist Board, underscoring the nation's successful marketing and promotional strategies.
The ceremony served as a high-profile gathering for the global travel industry, hosting tourism and hospitality representatives from over 40 countries. The evening celebrated the collective success of the sector, with more than 15 Maldivian tourism and hospitality brands receiving awards across aviation, luxury resorts, diving, and destination management.
Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen emphasized the transformative power of the industry during the event. He noted that the sector has evolved remarkably from just two resorts in 1972 to become the primary pillar of the national economy.
“Tourism has become the backbone of our economy, a source of opportunity for our people, and a bridge connecting our island nation to every corner of the globe,” Minister Ameen stated.
This latest victory reinforces the Maldives' dominant position in global tourism. The country previously held the title of World’s Leading Destination for six consecutive years from 2020 to 2025 and had secured the Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination title for five straight years leading up to 2024.
Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards are widely regarded as the industry's equivalent of the Oscars, recognizing excellence and achievement across the global travel and hospitality sectors.
