Maldives’ security slipping away under Muizzu policies, warns Nasheed

Former President and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed has warned that the Maldives is losing its safety and security as a result of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policies.
In a post on X on Friday, Nasheed said the Maldives must not enter into rivalry among major powers. He said the government’s decision to strengthen defence ties with Pakistan would increase India’s concerns and could put the Maldives at risk.
The comments come after President Muizzu’s official visit to Pakistan, during which the two countries agreed to further strengthen cooperation in trade, defence, maritime safety and security, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Nasheed also highlighted Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official statement made alongside President Muizzu, which included a warning about the creation of a separate state in Kashmir and the possibility of war if red lines over the Indus River issue were crossed.
