Maldives Seeks New Supply Routes for Food and Medicine Amid Regional Conflict

Politics ·
The Maldivian government is negotiating with multiple partner nations to establish new, resilient supply chains for essential goods, including food, fuel, and medicine. The move aims to safeguard national security against disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel detailed the strategy during a press conference held by the national ministerial committee monitoring the conflict's impact. He stated that high-level diplomatic talks are underway to secure alternative import routes. As a concrete step, a special government team was recently sent to Colombo, Sri Lanka, for discussions focused on ensuring uninterrupted access to critical supplies. Minister Khaleel emphasized the proactive nature of these diplomatic efforts. Domestically, the government has begun a comprehensive expenditure review, implementing austerity measures to free up funds for these priority areas. The minister also addressed challenges facing the tourism sector, specifically issues arising from the closure of Gulf airspace. "The problems associated with the closure of the Gulf airspace are being identified and measures are being taken... efforts are being made to find an immediate solution," Khaleel said. The government continues to monitor the safety of Maldivians abroad. Embassies in the Middle East are providing daily updates on citizens in the region, and successful evacuations have been carried out for those living in high-risk areas.
