A Maldivian cargo vessel carrying critical humanitarian aid docked in Sri Lanka on Friday, delivering relief supplies to a nation grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.
The shipment, consisting of 25,000 cases of canned tuna packed into 14 containers aboard the Maldives State Shipping vessel Galena, supplements a $50,000 financial contribution previously made by the Maldivian government. The Maldives High Commission in Colombo is handling the formal handover of the provisions.
Maldivian officials described the assistance as a demonstration of the strong and enduring diplomatic relationship between the two neighboring countries, emphasizing solidarity with the Sri Lankan people during this period of crisis.
Support has also emerged from the Maldivian public. A telethon organized by local media outlets successfully mobilized private contributions, raising an impressive $800,000 from both institutions and individual citizens. These funds have been transferred to the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be channeled toward relief efforts.
The scale of the humanitarian response underscores the severity of the disaster. Cyclone Ditwah has resulted in 479 confirmed fatalities, with 350 people still reported missing. The storm has severely impacted the lives of approximately 1.2 million residents across the island nation.
