The Maldives has directed a portion of its record-breaking Fitr Zakat collection this year to provide urgent humanitarian aid for Gaza and strengthen support for underprivileged citizens domestically.
Zakat House confirmed that $32,425 has been handed over to ISRA Association Maldives, a leading civil society organization dedicated to Palestinian rights and humanitarian assistance. These funds will be used specifically to deliver critical food aid to families suffering amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. ISRA Association welcomed the donation as a vital lifeline for vulnerable communities enduring immense hardship.
In addition, $27,480 from the Fitr Zakat proceeds was allocated to the Trust Fund of the Ministry of Social and Family Development to assist underprivileged locals across the Maldivian islands, ensuring that charitable efforts benefit the domestic community.
This year's total Fitr Zakat collection surpassed $972,762, marking a record high compared to the past three years and reflecting strong communal participation. In accordance with Islamic principles, the distribution included providing Zakat al-Fitr at a rate of $389 per head to all registered poor and needy individuals during Ramadan. This dual allocation underscores the Maldivian commitment to Islamic charity, global solidarity, and addressing both international crises and local social welfare needs.
