Maldives Signs Regional Deal to Accelerate Customs Clearance for Imports and Exports

World ·
The Maldives Customs Service has entered into a strategic information-sharing agreement with the customs authorities of Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Nepal to expedite the clearance of imports and exports across the region. Signed during the 14th meeting of the Customs Group of the South Asian Association for Regional Economic Cooperation (SAARC), the deal establishes a preemptive data-sharing system. This allows customs authorities to receive detailed information on goods before vessels arrive at their respective ports, eliminating critical delays in the logistics chain. Commissioner General of Customs Fathimath Diyana signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan, and Dr. Yurendra Basnett, the Asian Development Bank's Principal Regional Cooperation Specialist for South Asia. By digitizing and accelerating the exchange of manifests and cargo data, the four nations aim to facilitate smoother trade flows and reduce the operational costs associated with cargo handling and transport. The Maldives Customs Service highlighted that the arrangement is a significant step toward strengthening regional cooperation and improving coordination at border points. Beyond efficiency, the agreement is designed to enhance security. The ability to obtain comprehensive data before a ship docks allows authorities to enforce laws and regulations more effectively, strengthening overall supply-chain security. For the local business community, the move is expected to directly address the persistent delays faced when receiving goods at border points. By streamlining the administrative process, the agreement seeks to lower the financial burden on businesses engaged in cross-border commerce and foster a more resilient regional trade ecosystem. The 14th SAARC Customs Group meeting, hosted by the Maldives Customs Service, took place from August 19 to 20, serving as the primary forum for these diplomatic and economic advancements.
