Maldives Streamlines Tourist Visa Extensions to 48-Hour Online Process
Politics ·
The Maldives has launched a simplified online system for tourists to extend their visas, aiming to boost the vital tourism sector amid regional instability. Starting 1 April, visitors can apply for an extension with minimal documentation and receive approval within 48 hours.
Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim announced the new measure, explaining that travelers need only submit a photo of their current visa and pay the fee through a dedicated online platform. This replaces a more cumbersome process with longer deadlines and more paperwork. The change is designed to enhance visitor convenience and support industry recovery.
The announcement comes as the country faces a relative decline in tourist arrivals. Minister Thoriq noted that 30 percent of tourists typically arrive via Middle Eastern airlines, routes significantly disrupted by the ongoing conflict in the region. The simplified visa extension is a direct response to these challenges, intended to make it easier for visitors already in the Maldives to prolong their stays.
In a further move to diversify its tourism economy, the government is advancing plans to introduce specialized visas for digital nomads and content creators. These initiatives are expected to benefit local guesthouses and broaden the nation's appeal beyond its traditional resort-based holidays, creating new revenue streams for the local economy.
