Maldives Strengthens Trade and Development Ties at OACPS Summit in Guinea

Politics ·
The Maldives has engaged in high-level discussions to bolster economic cooperation and sustainable development at the 11th Summit of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). The event, held in Malabo, Guinea from March 27 to 29, 2026, saw the Maldivian delegation advocate for enhanced trade ties and institutional strengthening within the multilateral forum. Led by Ambassador to Belgium Geela Ali, with Second Secretary Hassan Nawaaf, the delegation participated in sessions focusing on reinforcing the OACPS framework and increasing its effectiveness. Member states collectively emphasized the urgency of advancing shared priorities in economic growth and development, with Ambassador Ali also attending a special meeting of the OACPS Council of Ministers. The summit carried added weight as it followed the organization's 50th anniversary celebrations last year. Established in 1975 under the Georgetown Agreement, the OACPS provides a crucial platform for collaboration among its diverse member states and with key international partners like the European Union. The Maldives, having joined as a full member on December 9, 2022, continues to work closely within the OACPS to address global challenges and promote common interests, underscoring its active role in international diplomacy.
