Finance Minister Hassan Zareer told the People's Majlis today that the government aims to bring a total of 2.5 million tourists to the country during 2027, which has been designated as 'Visit Maldives Year'. Presenting the proposed state budget of MVR 59.7 billion for 2027, the Minister said the tourism industry is the main engine of the Maldivian economy. He stated that the government will give the highest priority next year to increasing tourist arrivals, strengthening tourism revenue, and ensuring benefits reach as many citizens as possible. Under normal circumstances, the country is estimated to receive around 2.28 million tourists next year. However, special activities planned for 'Visit Maldives Year' are expected to bring an additional 200,000 visitors, helping to meet the 2.5 million target. The Minister said this goal can be achieved through collaborative efforts between the government and industry participants, and that promotion in global markets will be strengthened in partnership with Visit Maldives Corporation, airlines, and other service providers. Plans also include a focus on increasing tourist numbers during the off-peak season and expanding flight services to the country.
