Maldives Targets Regional Investment Hub Status Through New Foreign Investment Act

World ·
The Maldives is implementing a strategic overhaul to establish itself as a competitive investment hub within the Indian Ocean, focusing on transparency and sectoral diversification. Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed outlined this vision during a business webinar hosted by the Maldives Embassy in Japan. Central to this strategy is the newly enacted Foreign Investment Act. Minister Saeed described the legislation as a cornerstone of the government's reform agenda, designed to replace bureaucratic hurdles with a transparent, reliable, and expedited system. By simplifying the procedures for establishing and expanding enterprises, the government aims to provide international investors with the legal confidence required for long-term capital commitments. While tourism continues to be the primary driver of the national economy, the Minister emphasized that reliance on a single sector is unsustainable. To ensure long-term economic resilience, the government is actively promoting investment in a broader array of industries, including renewable energy, maritime and logistics services, fisheries, and food production. Additionally, the administration is targeting growth in the digital economy, financial services, healthcare, and sustainable infrastructure. Minister Saeed noted that these diversification efforts are particularly critical given the Maldives' unique geographic challenges as an archipelago of over 1,000 islands. By expanding the industrial base, the nation can better manage logistical constraints and create a more stable economic environment. Highlighting the strong bilateral ties between the Maldives and Japan, the Minister urged local entrepreneurs to adopt Japanese business practices to enhance national productivity and innovation. He concluded by inviting Japanese firms to deepen their partnerships with the Maldives, citing Japan's history of successful, long-term collaborations as a blueprint for overcoming logistical barriers and penetrating emerging markets.
