Maldives to Begin Land Reclamation for International Racing Track Next Week
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that land reclamation for a new international-standard racing track will commence next week, offering a dedicated venue for motorsports and addressing long-standing community concerns. The declaration was made during the 'Espresso with the President' youth event, where the President emphasized the project's focus on providing a safe, regulated facility for young enthusiasts.
The track will be developed outside the Hulhumalé highway, designed to host competitions in racing and drifting. 'We are creating a track suitable for international competitions in both racing and drifting. It will be built outside the highway, secured, paved, and supported through land reclamation,' President Muizzu stated, specifically referencing the highway to Hulhumalé.
Funding has already been allocated, with the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) tasked with implementation. The President described the initiative as a positive development aimed at transforming the local motorsports scene and boosting sports tourism.
Currently, drifting events are held on public roads in Hulhumalé's Phase Two and other islands like Addu City, leading to resident complaints to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) over noise and safety issues. The Racing Association of Maldives has repeatedly highlighted the lack of specialised facilities to successive sports ministers, without a permanent solution until now.
President Muizzu had earlier confirmed in his Presidential Address that development would begin in the first quarter of the year. This project promises to enhance youth engagement, reduce public disturbances, and position the Maldives as a contender in global motorsports.
