Maldives to Equip Atoll Hospitals with Medical Launches by End of January
Politics ·
The Maldives government is set to enhance healthcare delivery across its outer atolls by the end of January, with the Ministry of Health confirming the deployment of specialised medical launches for atoll hospitals under the Maldives Health Line initiative. Health Minister Abdulla Nazim emphasised that dedicated marine transport is crucial for reinforcing the referral and service-delivery network linking regional hospitals with island-based health centres. He highlighted that reliable inter-island transportation is essential for ensuring continuous care and reducing logistical constraints for specialist physicians and clinical teams. The initiative aims to improve equitable access to secondary and specialised healthcare services for residents of remote islands. The ministry is allocating seven medical launches to regional and atoll hospitals lacking such assets, with three already arrived in Malé City. The project, supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under its Asia Pacific Vaccine Access Facility (APVAX) Project, will ultimately distribute 20 multipurpose high-speed medical launches across all 20 atolls to bolster healthcare accessibility, emergency preparedness, and health equity nationwide.
