Maldives to Establish National Library Branches Across Six Atoll Islands

Politics ·
The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage is expanding the reach of the National Library by establishing six new branches across the atolls to foster a culture of research and learning among younger generations. Minister Heena Waleed announced the initiative during a press conference at the President’s Office, emphasizing that the government aims to modernize library facilities in urban centers. The project is part of a broader strategic goal to eventually ensure a National Library branch is available on every inhabited island in the Maldives. Construction is already underway in Addu City and Fuvahmulah, where foundations have been laid and practical work is ongoing. For the next phase of expansion slated for 2026, the government has identified six islands where development can be expedited: Ihavandhoo and Kelaa in Haa Alif Atoll, Kendhukulhudhoo in Noonu Atoll, Mandhoo in Alif Dhaalu Atoll, Meedhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, and Buruni in Thaa Atoll. To accelerate the timeline, the government is currently allocating land for facilities scheduled for construction within this year. Minister Waleed noted that inspection teams have already begun assessing existing buildings on the six selected islands to determine their suitability for conversion into library branches. Beyond the expansion of literary resources, the Ministry is implementing several initiatives to preserve national monuments and cultural artifacts. As part of this effort, the government is developing a new policy designed to generate sustainable income from these cultural assets, ensuring that the Maldives' heritage is both protected and utilized for future generations.
