Maldives to Host First Regional SAARC Anaesthesiology Congress in Ukulhas

The Maldives will host the 15th International Congress of Anaesthesiologists of SAARC Countries for the first time, marking a significant milestone for the nation's specialized medical community. The event is scheduled to take place in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll, from August 15 to 16. Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare and local hospitals, the conference has attracted over 200 registered delegates. The gathering will bring together regional and international experts to discuss the latest clinical advancements and strengthen professional ties across South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations. Speaking on the 'Raajje Miadhu' programme, Dr. Ahmed Ashraf, Director General of Health Services, emphasized the educational value of the congress. He noted that the event provides a critical platform to discuss future healthcare initiatives and explore new opportunities for local medical training. The ability to host such an event reflects a growing capacity within the Maldivian healthcare system. Dr. Asadh Mohamed Shaheed, a consultant in anaesthesiology at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, highlighted the historical challenges that previously made hosting impossible. He recalled that during the 1980s, the country had only one specialist in the field; today, that number has grown to 11 active Maldivian specialists. In preparation for the main event, technical specialists will lead specialized workshops for 120 doctors across four facilities in the Malé region. These sessions will cover critical care at Hulhumalé Hospital, chronic pain management at Tree Top Hospital, airway management at ADK Hospital, and regional anaesthesia at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. The Ministry of Health expects that the congress will not only expand domestic medical capacity and advance patient care but also contribute to the local economy by bringing international delegates to the islands.
