Maldives to Introduce Standardized School Uniforms Nationwide by 2027
Politics ·
The Ministry of Education has mandated standardized uniforms for all government schools, with implementation scheduled for the 2027 academic year. The nationwide directive aims to streamline procurement processes and enhance affordability for Maldivian families.
Following extensive consultations with school administrators, the ministry established specific color guidelines aligned with national symbols. Shirts will be restricted to white, sky blue, tea green, or light red, while trousers and skirts must be dark black or navy blue. Activity uniforms will consist of plain black tracksuits paired with tops in designated primary colors or school-specific hues.
Accessory regulations require belts, socks, and formal shoes to be plain black, with athletic footwear permitted only during physical activities. The standards vary by educational level—Key Stage 5 students must wear ties, while younger pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2 are exempt but must follow specific tucking guidelines.
Arabiyya School will maintain its traditional attire while adopting the new activity wear. Ministry officials emphasized that the reforms balance institutional identity with practical considerations, prioritizing student comfort, mobility, and parental affordability. Schools have been instructed to complete the transition before the 2027 term begins.
