Maldives to Launch 50MW Renewable Energy Project Across 24 Islands
World ·
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy is preparing to launch a series of renewable energy projects designed to generate over 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity across 24 islands. This initiative is a critical step toward the administration's goal of sourcing 33 percent of the nation's electricity from renewable energy by the end of 2028.
Implemented under the Ministry's ASPIRE and ARISE programs, the project aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's energy policy. The primary objective is to bolster national energy security and drastically reduce the high costs associated with importing fossil fuels for electricity generation.
By prioritizing environmentally sustainable power, the government aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions and solidify the Maldives' commitment to global climate change mitigation efforts. Beyond environmental impact, the installation of this capacity is expected to stabilize electricity services and ensure long-term, sustainable energy access for the affected island communities.
Ahmed Ali, Director General at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, revealed that these projects are part of a much larger strategy. Efforts are currently underway to establish 164 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) hybrid systems across 101 islands in the outer atolls. To support this generation and ensure grid reliability, the government is also installing 158 MW of battery energy storage systems across various islands.
The Ministry emphasized that these investments build upon the progress made over the last two years to provide uninterrupted 24-hour electricity to all inhabited islands. The ASPIRE and ARISE projects will span both the northern and southern regions, accelerating the transition away from fossil fuel dependency and moving the Maldives closer to its ambitious 2028 targets.
