Maldives to Relocate Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi Amid Record Import Surge
World ·
The Maldives is experiencing unprecedented import volumes driven by robust economic growth, prompting the government to initiate a historic relocation of the Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi. Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced the move during the second Maldives Maritime Conference, identifying the aging harbor as a primary bottleneck for the nation's economy.
Minister Saeed revealed that the current harbor, developed nearly 40 years ago, can no longer keep pace with the country's commercial needs. The urgency is underscored by the tourism sector, where projects valued at approximately USD 11 billion are currently underway, requiring massive inflows of materials. At the time of the announcement, approximately 5,000 containers were awaiting clearance, with daily import levels reaching historic highs.
To address these challenges, the government has formed a consortium of three companies to develop a state-of-the-art facility. Minister Saeed stated that the new modern harbor is expected to be fully operational by November 2028, providing a critical solution to a logistics crisis that has hindered economic progression for four decades.
Complementing this infrastructure shift, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is focusing on digital transformation and human capital. MPL Chief Commercial Officer Hussain Shafeeq noted that the relocation will introduce AI and the government's "2.0 system" to streamline cargo-handling and management. He emphasized that because the sea comprises 90 percent of the Maldives' territory, strengthening the maritime sector is a national priority.
Shafeeq further highlighted that MPL is prioritizing human resource development to ensure the workforce possesses the technical skills required to manage the new, advanced systems. The transition to Thilafushi is expected to significantly increase cargo capacity and reduce clearance times, marking a revolutionary shift in how the Maldives manages its trade logistics.
The Maldives Maritime Conference serves as a strategic platform, bringing together international experts and stakeholders to exchange views on the development of the maritime sector and identify solutions to the region's logistical challenges.
