The Maldives has welcomed an unprecedented 2.2 million tourists in 2025, marking a significant 9.9 percent increase compared to the previous year. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, a total of 2,213,795 tourists visited the country by December 27th, up from 2,014,577 in 2024. The first 27 days of December alone saw 191,734 tourists, reflecting an 8.4 percent growth year-on-year. The top source countries for visitors included China (328,503), Russia (272,852), the United Kingdom (199,570), Germany (166,079), and Italy (147,529). The milestone of 2 million arrivals was achieved on November 27th, a month earlier than in 2024, with an average of 6,466 international arrivals per day. Velana International Airport (VIA) projected its busiest day yet on the 27th, handling over 22,000 passengers, with more than 11,000 arrivals and departures. The surge in tourism highlights the Maldives' growing appeal as a premier global destination.
