Maldives Tourist Arrivals Dip to 152,000 in April Amid Middle East Flight Disruptions
Politics ·
Tourist arrivals in the Maldives fell to 152,861 in April, marking a significant 24.4 percent decrease compared to the 202,214 visitors recorded during the same month last year. According to data from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, this dip has contributed to a broader downward trend for the year.
Cumulatively, total arrivals for the year have reached 813,503. This represents a 5.1 percent decline from the 857,386 visitors who traveled to the archipelago during the same period last year. Currently, the country is averaging 6,668 tourist arrivals per day.
Authorities attribute the decline primarily to temporary flight cancellations resulting from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. However, the Ministry noted that several airlines have since resumed their operations to the Maldives, signaling a gradual recovery in visitor numbers. Of the total arrivals recorded this year, the vast majority—799,695 tourists—entered the country by air.
Despite the volatility in arrival numbers, the Maldives continues to see growth in its infrastructure. The number of registered tourist facilities, comprising mainly resorts and marina establishments, has increased from 67,470 at the start of the year to 68,005.
China remains the leading source market for the year with 122,134 visitors, followed by Russia with 104,174. The United Kingdom ranks third with 72,453 arrivals, while Italy and Germany follow with 65,583 and 53,564 visitors, respectively.
The government stated that efforts are ongoing to mitigate the impact of geopolitical tensions on the tourism sector. Industry experts remain optimistic that the sector will stabilize and improve as flight connectivity returns to normal levels.
