Maldives Transports 37 Tonnes of Sea-to-Air Cargo in Initial April Push
Politics ·
The Maldives recorded the transport of 37 tonnes of sea-to-air cargo to international destinations during April, marking a strategic step in the nation's logistics evolution. This volume is equivalent to eight Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in container capacity, demonstrating the growing viability of multimodal transport.
The sea-to-air service, which officially launched on May 15, 2024, enables cargo arriving by sea to be efficiently transferred to aircraft for faster delivery to global markets. This hybrid approach combines the cost-effectiveness of maritime shipping with the speed of air transit.
According to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), the initial April operations saw cargo shipped to five different countries. These shipments were facilitated by four major international carriers: Emirates, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, and Qatar Airways.
Since its inception, the service has expanded rapidly. It is now supported by 17 different airlines, operating through a joint partnership between Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). This collaboration ensures a seamless transition of goods from the port to the tarmac.
This transportation model is widely utilized globally to drive economic efficiency. The Maldivian government has identified significant opportunities to scale this business, leveraging the Maldives' strategic position as a hub frequently visited by a diverse array of international airlines.
By integrating sea and air logistics, the Maldives aims to enhance its trade competitiveness, reduce transit times for exporters, and attract further investment into the nation's transport infrastructure.
