Maldives-Turkiye Trade Deal Opens Market Access for 85 Million Consumers

World ·
The Maldives and Turkiye have officially implemented a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), granting Maldivian fish exporters access to a massive consumer market of more than 85 million people. The deal, which entered into force on August 1, 2024, aims to diversify export destinations and strengthen bilateral economic ties. Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade Mohamed Saeed described the accord as a significant milestone. He credited the shared vision of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the breakthrough, noting that the agreement effectively bridges the Maldives to a broader European trade network totaling approximately 90 million consumers. Under the terms of the PTA, import duties will be waived on 75 specific listed items. This strategic move lowers the financial barriers for Maldivian fisheries to enter the Turkish market while simultaneously granting local businesses and consumers more affordable access to Turkish goods. “The agreement paves the way for our fish exporters to tap into a vast market, while also giving Maldivian consumers and firms affordable access to Turkish products,” Minister Saeed stated. He emphasized that the government will continue working to deepen trade cooperation between the two nations. The groundwork for the agreement began during President Muizzu’s official visit to Turkiye in late 2023. Following the completion of necessary legal procedures and the exchange of final written notifications, the deal is now active, promising to stimulate commerce and reduce longstanding trade barriers. For the Maldives, the treaty is viewed as a strategic move to alleviate pressure on traditional fish export markets. By expanding its footprint in Turkiye, the Maldives hopes to increase the competitiveness of its fisheries sector and lower the cost of essential imports for its citizens.
