Maldives Walks Out of UN General Assembly in Protest of Netanyahu Speech

The Maldivian delegation exited the United Nations General Assembly session on Tuesday in a decisive protest before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his address. This marks the third consecutive year the Maldives has staged a walkout during the Israeli leader's speech, signaling a steadfast diplomatic stance on the Palestinian conflict. The delegation, led by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, joined several other nations in leaving the assembly hall to signal their refusal to normalize the current political climate. Following the action, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam emphasized that no nation is above international law and that all countries must abide by global legal standards equally. Minister Adam reiterated that the Maldives remains firmly committed to the Palestinian cause. The government continues to advocate for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem serving as its capital. Furthermore, the Maldives is calling for Palestine to be granted full membership within the United Nations. At various international forums, the Maldives has consistently condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, describing the ongoing violence as genocide and criticizing the expansion of illegal settlements in occupied territories. The administration has repeatedly called for accountability and justice for the crimes committed against the Palestinian people. Under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives has adopted a more assertive position on the issue than previous administrations. President Muizzu has clarified that while the nation's foreign policy seeks to maintain amicable relations with most global partners, Israel is a notable exception. This policy is reflected in domestic law, as the Maldives has amended its regulations to prohibit holders of Israeli passports from entering the country. By leveraging its presence at the UN and other global platforms, the Maldives continues to champion Palestinian rights, arguing that international law must be upheld without exception to ensure global peace and justice.
