Maldives Welcomes 1.2 Million Tourists Amid Slight Dip in Annual Arrivals

The Maldives has recorded 1,229,419 tourist arrivals so far this year, according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. While the figure remains high, it represents a 4.5 percent decline compared to the 1,287,850 visitors who arrived during the same period last year. Recent monthly data shows a similar trend, with 159,537 tourists visiting in July, a slight 1.3 percent decrease from the 161,766 recorded in July of the previous year. On average, the archipelago is currently welcoming 5,911 tourists per day. The Ministry attributed the year-on-year decline primarily to geopolitical instability. The conflict in the Middle East led several airlines to temporarily suspend flights to the Maldives, limiting accessibility for a significant portion of the international market. However, officials noted that arrival numbers are beginning to recover as these airlines resume their operations. China continues to be the primary source market, contributing 210,109 visitors, followed by Russia with 175,814. Other significant markets include the United Kingdom (96,179), Italy (78,982), and Germany (75,550). Air travel remains the dominant mode of entry, with 1,213,842 visitors arriving by plane. The vast majority—1,199,442 tourists—passed through Velana International Airport in the capital, while Gan International Airport in the south recorded 4,475 arrivals. Despite the current dip, the government remains optimistic about the sector's trajectory. Last year, the Maldives hit a milestone of 2.2 million tourists. The Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation has expressed confidence that sustained growth efforts will ensure that this year's total arrivals do not fall below last year's record.
