Maldives Zakat al-Mal Collections Exceed 2025 Total Within Nine Months

World ·
The Maldives Zakat House has announced that Zakat al-Mal (wealth Zakat) collections for the current year have already surpassed the total amount received throughout 2025, with three months remaining in the calendar year. Official statistics reveal that by the end of September, collections reached USD 7.1 million. This marks an increase of USD 181,968.53—a growth of 2.64 percent—over the USD 6.9 million accumulated during the entirety of the previous year. This surge signals robust public compliance with the obligatory Islamic practice across the archipelago. State authorities accept Zakat al-Mal payments in both Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) and US Dollars (USD). Of the total revenue recorded by the end of last month, the majority was received in local currency, supplemented by USD 34,021.41 in direct dollar payments. Because Zakat al-Mal can be paid at any point during the year, the Zakat House anticipates that the final total will increase substantially by the end of December. Zakat al-Mal is one of the five core pillars of Islam, serving as a religious obligation for individuals whose personal wealth meets or exceeds a minimum threshold, known as the Nisaab, and has been held for one full lunar year. The Maldives Zakat House confirmed that as of September 20, the Nisaab threshold is set at USD 1,249.42. To ensure efficiency and transparency, the collection of Zakat in the Maldives is officially managed by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). The tax authority has streamlined the process by providing digital payment services, enabling citizens to calculate their obligations and fulfill payments online via the official MIRA portal.
