Maldivian Airlines Launches First Direct Flight Route Between Maldives and Australia
Politics ·
The national carrier, Maldivian, has launched its first-ever direct flight service between Melbourne, Australia, and Velana International Airport (VIA), eliminating the need for passengers to connect through third-party hubs. The inaugural flight arrived on May 19 carrying 240 tourists, greeted by traditional Maldivian drumming in a celebratory welcome.
Operating on a weekly basis, the service departs Male' every Tuesday and returns the following week. The 11-hour journey is serviced by wide-body aircraft, a strategic move by the airline to ensure comfort and reliability on long-haul routes. Maldivian officials report that advance bookings have already exceeded expectations, with the first three scheduled flights completely sold out and an average booking rate of 50 percent.
This expansion comes at a critical time for the aviation sector. Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, noted that tourist arrivals have faced declines due to regional instability in the Middle East affecting international transport. He emphasized that Australia is a key market, and a direct link will significantly increase the Maldives' reach. Currently, Australia ranks as the 10th largest source market, with 18,066 visitors recorded as of May 16.
Beyond tourism, the new route is expected to strengthen diplomatic and trade ties. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iruthisham Adam, stated that the service reflects President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to improving global connectivity. She highlighted that the air link would facilitate artistic and cultural exchanges, as well as expand business interests between the two nations.
Industry projections suggest the route will attract approximately 11,000 additional tourists annually. This influx is expected to provide a vital boost to the tourism-dependent economy and the wider business sector during a period of global transportation uncertainty.
