Politics ·
A Maldivian delegation is participating in the 52nd session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), currently convening at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The session, which began recently and will conclude on the 15th of this month, is conducted by the United Nations Human Rights Council’s UPR Working Group. During the two-week proceedings, the Working Group will evaluate the human rights records of 14 member states. The countries under review include Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Palau, Paraguay, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, and Somalia. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldivian delegation will deliver strategic recommendations to these nations, ensuring the interventions align with the Maldives' core government policies. This process allows member states to propose constructive measures to help peer nations strengthen their human rights frameworks and implementation. The delegation is led by Dr. Salma Rasheed, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva. Supporting her are Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Uza, Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Aishath Rayahyn, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh from the Permanent Mission. The UPR is a critical international mechanism designed to ensure that all UN member states are held accountable for their efforts in promoting and protecting human rights. By assessing progress and identifying gaps, the review process fosters global cooperation on humanitarian standards. This session is part of the fourth UPR review cycle, which spans from 2022 to 2027. The UPR Working Group typically convenes three times a year to maintain a consistent cycle of review and recommendation for the international community.
