Maldivian Expands Seaplane Fleet With Two New Twin Otter Classic Aircraft

The national airline, Maldivian, has signed an agreement to purchase two DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft from Canadian manufacturer De Havilland, becoming the first airline globally to order this latest-generation model. The agreement was signed by Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas and De Havilland’s Vice President of Sales for Asia Pacific and Middle East, Yogesh Gard. This acquisition marks the first time the airline has added new Twin Otters to its fleet since 2018. Twin Otter aircraft serve as a critical pillar of the Maldives' tourism infrastructure, providing the primary link between Velana International Airport and resorts scattered across the archipelago. The Classic 300-G model is specifically engineered for the unique Maldivian environment, featuring modern avionics and a reduced airframe weight. These enhancements allow the aircraft to carry more passengers and baggage while lowering overall operating costs and simplifying maintenance. According to Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas, the addition of these aircraft will strengthen the airline's existing fleet of 11 Twin Otters and increase its capacity to serve current resorts and inhabited islands. He further noted that the new aircraft will enable the airline to expand its reach to new destinations across the atolls. Since launching its seaplane operations with just two aircraft in 2014, Maldivian has evolved into a cornerstone of the country's transport network. Iyas highlighted that because the 300-G is pre-designed for the specific demands of the Maldives, the aircraft require no further modifications before entering service, ensuring a seamless integration into the fleet.
