Maldivian Parliament Concludes Second Session Following Twice-Extended Schedule

The People's Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament, has officially concluded its second session of the year and entered a period of recess. While parliamentary rules dictate that the second session should wrap up by August 15, the chamber required additional time to address a backlog of outstanding legislative matters. To ensure these critical issues were resolved, members voted to extend the session twice, ultimately pushing the closing date to August 27. Under the established parliamentary framework, the legislative year is divided into three distinct sessions. The first session typically runs from February 1 to May 15, followed by the second session from June 1 to August 15. The third and final session of the year is scheduled to take place from October 1 through the end of November. Though sessions generally conclude within their designated timeframes, extensions are permitted if urgent or important government business remains unfinished. Such prolongations are not automatic and require a formal vote of approval from the parliament members. This year's legislative calendar has been particularly demanding. The Parliament did not take a recess between the first and second sessions; instead, the second session commenced immediately after the first concluded to maintain momentum on pressing national issues. Following this current recess, the Majlis is expected to reconvene in October for its third and final session of the year to finalize the legislative agenda.
