Maldivian Parliament Extends Second Session to August 20 for Pending Legislation

The People's Majlis has voted to extend its current second parliamentary session until August 20, providing lawmakers with additional time to finalize a slate of pending legislative business. Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla introduced the motion, which was subsequently approved by a majority of the 58 members present during the sitting. The Speaker emphasized that the extension is critical to ensure the completion of essential work scheduled for this session, preventing delays in key legislative outputs. Under the established rules of procedure, the Maldivian Parliament divides its annual calendar into three distinct sessions. The first session typically runs from February 1 to May 15, followed by the second from June 1 to August 15, and concluding with a third session from October 1 through the end of November. While the second session of the year was originally slated to conclude on August 15, parliamentary regulations provide a mechanism for extension. If essential business remains unfinished, the session's duration can be lengthened, provided the move is ratified by a majority vote of the members. This procedural extension allows the government and lawmakers to address outstanding bills and motions before the scheduled break, ensuring that the legislative agenda remains on track for the remainder of the year.
