Maldivian Parliament Extends Second Session Until August 27 to Finalize Pending Bills

World ·
The Maldivian Parliament has voted to extend its second session for a second time, pushing the official adjournment date to 27 August. The decision aims to ensure that critical legislative business and committee workloads are completed before the house enters its scheduled recess. Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated that the extension is a procedural necessity, allowing committees to finalize extensive reports and pending bills. According to the Parliament's regular calendar, the second session typically runs from 1 June to 15 August. However, the conclusion of this year's session has been deferred twice to accommodate the legislative agenda. Last week, a first extension was approved, moving the closing date to 20 August. The most recent motion, tabled by the Speaker, secured 58 votes in favor, granting an additional week of activity. This ensures that the legislative body can conclude its current mandate before the Parliament goes into recess until 1 October. Under the Parliament’s rules of procedure, session terms can be extended if a majority of members agree that essential work remains unfinished. Speaker Abdul Raheem emphasized that these extensions are strictly procedural rather than political, intended solely to prevent a backlog of unfinished reports and bills as the session draws to a close.
