The People's Majlis on Tuesday passed a bill concerning the privileges of diplomatic missions, consular posts, and international organizations, subsequently sending it to a relevant committee for further review. MP Dawood stated that the bill is important for establishing a robust legal framework that aligns with the international treaties the Maldives has signed, clearly defining and stipulating the privileges granted in the country. He noted the bill aims to set the scope of these privileges and the principles and procedures for granting them. Members of the People's National Congress (PNC) who spoke on the bill said it is crucial for solidifying the nation's foreign policy and that it would further enhance the confidence of missions operating in the Maldives. Key provisions of the bill include details on managing consular relations, covering the work of consular officers or staff, and the definitions used regarding their responsibilities.
