Maldivian Parliament to Debate Motion to Remove Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim
Politics ·
The People's Majlis (the Maldivian Parliament) has scheduled a decisive session for May 31 to debate a motion seeking the removal of Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim from his office. The motion, which was formally submitted on May 14, will be the primary focus of the term's 20th session.
To ensure a structured proceeding, the Parliament’s General Committee has established strict guidelines for the debate. One hour has been allocated for the entire discussion, with speaking time distributed among the various political parties. Each parliamentarian will be permitted a single three-minute intervention to present their arguments. In accordance with parliamentary rules, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim will be granted 10 minutes to defend his position before the assembly.
Under the current rules of the Majlis, the introduction of this motion takes precedence over all other legislative business. No other items on the agenda can be discussed until a final decision regarding the Deputy Speaker's tenure is reached. The session will be presided over by the Speaker of Parliament.
While the Deputy Speaker is permitted to address the house in his own defense, he is legally barred from participating in the final vote. The outcome will depend on the composition of the members present; Ahmed Nazim will only be removed from his post if the motion is passed by a majority of the members present and voting.
This move comes as part of the ongoing political dynamics within the legislature, where the stability of leadership roles often reflects the shifting alliances among the political parties represented in the Majlis.
