Maldivian Rufiyaa Symbol Joins Global Unicode Standard for Unified Digital Use

The official symbol for the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) has been integrated into the international Unicode Standard, ensuring a consistent visual representation across all digital platforms worldwide, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) announced Wednesday. Designated as code point U+20C2 in Version 18.0 by The Unicode Consortium, the symbol provides a global technical benchmark for the currency graphic. Since its formal issuance in 2022, the MVR symbol often appeared inconsistently across different websites and mobile applications due to a lack of standardized formatting criteria. This integration means that the national currency symbol will now be rendered uniformly across diverse operating systems and digital tools. The central bank described the move as a significant milestone that eliminates visual discrepancies, though it noted that full functional availability will roll out gradually as platforms implement their upcoming system updates. The MMA expressed gratitude to the technical teams and stakeholders whose efforts secured the symbol's placement within the global standard. The transition from a local design to an international digital standard marks the final stage of a process that began with a public design competition. Following that competition, an official judging panel selected the winning entry, which was subsequently rolled out in 2022 and printed on physical banknotes.
