Maldivian Schools Host Vibrant Celebrations to Commemorate National Day Independence

Schools across Malé and the various atolls have organized vibrant celebrations to mark National Day, reflecting on the nation's historic struggle for sovereignty. The annual event, observed on 1 Rabi’ul Awwal of the lunar calendar, fell on August 14 this year. Due to the date coinciding with a government holiday, educational institutions scheduled their festivities flexibly. While some schools held events on August 13, others have planned their commemorations for August 16 to ensure maximum student participation. In the capital, Dharumavantha School hosted one of the most elaborate celebrations. The event featured a special assembly where students delivered speeches and performed national songs, bringing the history of the Maldives to life. The program also included traditional dances and a dramatic reenactment of the events surrounding National Day, while photography activities during the interval break allowed students to document the festivities. National Day holds deep historical significance as it commemorates the Maldives' liberation from Portuguese rule in 1573. The independence was secured following a determined resistance movement led by Sultan Al-Ghazi Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-A’uzam and five companions. By integrating these celebrations into the school curriculum, educators aim to instill a sense of national pride and historical awareness in the younger generation. The events serve as a reminder of the courage and unity demonstrated by the nation's ancestors in the face of foreign occupation.
