Maldivian Youth Robotics Team Heads to South Korea for Global Challenge

World ·
A team of young Maldivian innovators has departed for Incheon, South Korea, to compete in the FIRST Global Challenge 2026. The prestigious international event, running from October 7 to 10, brings together youth from 192 countries to showcase their engineering skills and spirit of collaboration. This year's competition centers on the theme "Igniting Innovation," which tasks participants with designing and building robotic solutions to mitigate the devastating impacts of forest fires. The initiative aims to cultivate a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among youth while providing a platform for international cooperation. The national team consists of 10 students, with five members traveling to South Korea for the live event. The remaining five members will provide critical technical support remotely from the Maldives, ensuring a coordinated effort between the on-site contingent and the home team. Speaking with PSM News, the students expressed pride in representing the Maldives on a global stage. They noted that competing against 192 other nations proves that the Maldives possesses high-level technical skills despite its small size, and they expressed optimism about securing a strong ranking in the competition. This journey is the result of a collaborative national effort. The team's participation was facilitated by Women in Tech Maldives, the official country partner for FIRST Global since 2023. This partnership has previously yielded impressive results, including a top-50 global finish at last year's event in Panama. To ensure the team was competition-ready, the students underwent rigorous technical training at For Loop Coding Academy, a certified STEM center. This combined support from NGOs and educational institutions underscores the growing commitment to fostering technological literacy and innovation among Maldivian youth.
