Maldivians in Malaysia Celebrate Eid al-Adha with Traditional Cultural Festivities

Politics ·
The High Commission of the Maldives in Malaysia hosted "Eid Ufaa - Malaysia," a vibrant community celebration in Kuala Lumpur to mark the occasion of Eid al-Adha. The event served as a cultural anchor for Maldivians living abroad, focusing on strengthening communal bonds and preserving cherished traditions far from home. The festivities centered on traditional Maldivian customs, beginning with a communal Eid lunch and the ritual slaughter of Udhiya. The celebration integrated a mix of high-energy competition and cultural heritage, featuring Boduberu performances, traditional dances, and the Bodu Mas activity, alongside classic games like sack races and tug-of-war. Academic representation was strong, with approximately 50 students from the Maldives National University Student Union (MNUSU) participating. These students, representing institutions such as Sunway University, Taylor’s University, and Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU), helped lead the cultural activities, bridging the gap between the younger diaspora and their heritage. For the youngest attendees, the event offered a variety of themed activities, including face painting, cupcake decorating, water play, and appearances by Disney characters. The day's excitement culminated in a lucky draw, where both adults and children received prizes. In keeping with the spiritual essence of Eid al-Adha, the event concluded with a charity initiative to distribute Udhiya meat to those in need. The gathering saw a significant turnout, bringing together families and students residing in Malaysia to celebrate their shared identity in a spirit of unity and generosity.
