Maldivians trained in India are true ambassadors strengthening ties: Indian High Commission

Deputy High Commissioner Kumar Gorav, speaking at a ceremony to commemorate Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Day 2026, stated that Maldivians who complete training under various Indian programs are true ambassadors who strengthen the relationship between the two countries. The event was honored by Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development. Gorav noted that although governments of the two countries have formally exchanged diplomats, it is individuals from both countries who have received education and training in India who strengthen the bond between the people. He highlighted that the success of ITEC is not measured by the number of certificates issued, but by the services rendered to the country and society after returning from training. India has supported the development of human resources in the Maldives, with over 4,200 technical personnel trained in India over the past 6-7 years, including 1,269 Civil Service employees, 334 Local Council officials, 360 Customs officers, 323 legal sector officials, and 1,948 officers of the Maldives National Defence Force since 2014. The Ambassador stated that India provides training opportunities to the Maldives by focusing on areas prioritized by the Maldivian government, and that the friendship between the two countries is based on trust and respect.
