The capital city of Male’ and the neighboring island of Vilimale’ are now physically connected following the installation of the final superstructure segment of the Thilamale’ Bridge. The milestone, achieved by Indian engineering firm Afcons, marks a critical step in the assembly of the bridge's main framework. While the physical link is complete, project officials stated that the stretch remains closed to the public. Work now shifts to the final finishing phase, which includes the installation of safety railings, street lighting, and road surfacing to ensure the corridor meets safety standards before opening. Officially known as the Greater Male’ Connectivity Project, the Thilamale’ Bridge is designed as a catalyst for national economic growth. Upon taking office, the current administration prioritized the acceleration of the project in partnership with the Indian government and contracted engineers. Once fully operational, the 6.7-kilometer network of bridges, causeways, and highways will create a seamless transport corridor linking four major landmasses: Male’, Vilimale’, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi. This integration is expected to significantly reduce congestion and enhance the movement of goods and people within the capital region. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development confirmed that auxiliary works are progressing rapidly. Road construction on Gulhifalhu is advancing swiftly, while essential coastal revetment works—designed to protect the shoreline from erosion—are currently underway in Thilafushi. The USD 500 million megaproject is funded through a strategic partnership with India, which provided a USD 100 million grant and a USD 400 million Line of Credit, with additional funding contributed by the Maldivian government. The government expects the entire Thilamale’ Bridge network to be fully completed and commissioned by the end of next year.
