Malé Commercial Harbour Modernisation to Accelerate Trade and Economic Growth

The modernisation of the Malé Commercial Harbour is a critical driver for the Maldives' trade and economic development, according to the Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade, Mohamed Saeed. The project aims to align the nation's primary commercial hub with current economic realities, streamlining commercial activity and accelerating trade efficiency. Minister Saeed noted that while the need for transformation has been recognized for years, the harbour had remained largely stagnant since its establishment, receiving only minor upgrades. He credited President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu with taking the decisive initiative to move the project from planning to practical execution, framing the development as a vital step in ensuring the nation's economic resilience amidst global challenges. Significant progress is already underway. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Plc (MTCC) has completed a 100-metre quay wall, with yard paving expected to conclude in early October. These developments are part of a broader strategy by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to transition vessel cargo clearance operations from the congested Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi. To facilitate this shift, MPL is establishing essential infrastructure in Thilafushi, including workshops, offices, a canteen, and a mosque. The China Harbour Engineering Company is currently constructing a 375-metre quay wall for the international port and a portion of a two-kilometre domestic quay wall. Reclamation for an additional 820-metre quay wall is 40% complete, with precast unit construction slated for next month. The project follows a strict timeline: the domestic quay wall is expected to be finished by late November this year, while the international quay wall is scheduled for completion in July 2027. To ensure operational readiness, MPL has begun procuring heavy machinery, including two ship-to-shore cranes and one mobile harbour crane, all targeted for arrival by October 15, 2027. The government is also in the process of appointing further contractors to finalize the supporting infrastructure in Thilafushi, marking a major shift in how the Maldives manages its maritime logistics.
