Male’ Taxi App Surpasses 150,000 Rides as Digital Transport Shifts Take Hold

World ·
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has reported a significant milestone for its digital transport initiative, with the ‘Male’ Taxi’ application recording over 150,000 trips since its launch. According to official statistics, the platform has facilitated 157,971 bookings, attracting 52,790 registered users who are seeking a more modernized approach to urban mobility in the capital. Launched by the government on April 2 this year, the service initially debuted as a web-based platform. To enhance user experience and operational efficiency, MTCC transitioned to a dedicated mobile application on June 2. This shift allowed passengers to locate rides more easily and introduced a scheduling feature, enabling users to book trips in advance. To modernize the payment landscape, the app integrates a digital wallet where users can deposit funds. For greater flexibility, the platform also supports credit and debit card transactions via a secure bank gateway and a 'scan to pay' service. For those preferring traditional methods, bookings remain available through the official website and a dedicated hotline at 1655. Safety and security are central to the application's design. The platform includes a built-in emergency feature and allows passengers to communicate directly with drivers through integrated messaging and calling. Additionally, the app provides a streamlined reporting system for passengers who may have left personal belongings in a vehicle. Supporting the digital infrastructure is a fleet of 150 environmentally friendly electric vehicles supplied by Changa Automobiles. These vehicles, available in three different sizes to accommodate various passenger needs, operate on a 24-hour basis, marking a shift toward sustainable public transport in the densely populated capital city.
