The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will launch its official Male’ Taxi Line mobile application next week, moving beyond current web-based bookings to provide a more seamless experience for commuters. Transport Minister Mohamed Saeed announced the move during a press conference at the President’s Office, confirming that the app has received approval from the Apple App Store. While taxi services are currently accessible via a web application, the transition to a dedicated mobile app is expected to simplify the booking process and increase efficiency for users. Data from MTCC highlights a significant surge in demand for organized taxi services in the capital. Between April 13 and 18 alone, the service recorded 11,128 calls. Since the introduction of the web application, 7,251 rides were booked between April 18 and May 1. The Minister further revealed that total taxi trips in Male’ have increased by 50 percent since the service was first established. Efficiency metrics indicate that the service is performing well, with taxis arriving an average of eight minutes after a call is placed. The average trip duration currently stands at 12.2 minutes. This digital expansion is part of a broader government initiative to alleviate transportation congestion in Male’. The overall taxi service framework was officially inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on April 2, 2025, during a ceremony at Hulhumale’ Central Park. Despite the upcoming app launch, MTCC confirmed that the existing web portal remains active. Additionally, passengers can continue to book rides by dialing 1655, with all fares remaining consistent with the rates determined by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
