The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has reported that the Male’ Taxi Line has completed over 13,000 trips since its launch, marking a significant shift in urban mobility for the Greater Male’ area. Between April 18 and May 9, the service recorded 13,073 total trips, serving 9,550 unique customers. The vast majority of these journeys took place within the capital city of Male’, with 9,395 trips. Additionally, the service facilitated 1,966 trips to Hulhumale’ Phase One, 1,283 to Hulhumale’ Phase Two, and 429 trips to Velana International Airport. Established under a decree by President Mohamed Muizzu, the Male’ Taxi Line was designed to address a chronic shortage of available taxis across the region. The initiative aims to provide a reliable, structured alternative for residents and tourists navigating the densely populated urban hubs of the Maldives. To ensure environmental sustainability, MTCC deployed a fleet of 150 fully electric vehicles manufactured by the Changan Automobile Group. The fleet consists of three different vehicle sizes to accommodate various passenger needs, reducing the carbon footprint of urban transport in the capital. The service was officially inaugurated by President Muizzu on April 2 during a ceremony at Central Park. By integrating electric vehicles into the public transport network, the government is aligning urban development with broader environmental goals. Customers can book rides 24/7 through the official MTCC website or via the dedicated hotline 1655. To maintain affordability and regulation, all fares are calculated based on the official rates established by the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade.
