Man Arrested in Scam Case After Lengthy Delay

Local News ·
A 34-year-old man from Malé has been arrested in connection with a scam case, days after the incident occurred. Mohamed Reehan was taken into custody yesterday, and the Criminal Court has ordered his detention for 10 days. The court order states that evidence submitted indicates his involvement, including an email sent by police to a bank and its reply, a photo report on screenshots shared by the complainant, statements from the complainant and the account holder, a photo parade, and the accused's criminal record. The court noted that police delayed the arrest because information on his involvement and the account where money was deposited was provided late by the account holder. Police also highlighted that measures such as freezing the account holder's account were taken before receiving that information. The order further states that Reehan has a prior record of committing such crimes systematically and intentionally, and that further evidence will be submitted at another session. His detention will expire on the 13th of this month. According to police statistics, 32 scam cases were filed in the last six days of last month, with 737,695.26 Rufiyaa lost and 144,558.26 Rufiyaa recovered.
