A man convicted of stealing a number plate and a scent bottle from a parked pickup has been sentenced to house arrest by the H.Dh. Kulhudhuffushi Magistrate Court.
The case dates back to the morning of July 30, when a number plate and a scent bottle were taken from a bag placed in the back of a pickup parked outside a house in Kulhudhuffushi.
The state filed charges of theft against the man under the Maldives Penal Code. During the preliminary hearing and the fast-track hearing, the defendant voluntarily confessed to the offence.
Because of the confession, the sentence was reduced by one degree, resulting in a jail term of one month and 24 days.
However, as the defendant had requested a lighter sentence and had no prior criminal record, the court, under the provisions of the law, converted the prison sentence to house arrest.
The court therefore ordered that the convicted man be held under house arrest for a period of three months and 18 days.
