The Criminal Court has sentenced a Maldivian man to 10 years in prison and fined him MVR 750,000 for throwing a stone at a pedestrian while issuing a death threat. The incident took place last month in Malé, on Asrumagoolhi road, where the accused threw a stone at the victim's back, warning him not to walk on that road and stating that he would be killed if he did so again. The court, in its verdict delivered last Friday, stated that witness testimonies and video footage proved the accused intentionally threw the stone as a threat of fear. The state prosecuted the case under the Gang Crimes and Dangerous Offences Act. Due to time already served in detention, the man must now serve a remaining prison sentence of nine years and seven months. He has also been ordered to pay the fine to the state within two years.
