The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to 24 years and 11 months in prison and a fine of MVR 100,000 for trafficking dimorphine. The convict, Shyal bin Riswan, was arrested in connection with a drug trafficking case that originated from a police operation on April 26 of last year, following a tip-off. During the operation, officers discovered a small bag containing 30 grams of dimorphine hidden under the seat of a bicycle, along with other items used for drug trading such as rubber packets and sticks. Shyal denied the charges, claiming the bicycle and the stick were not his, but the court found the evidence presented by the prosecution sufficient to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
